Katharina Ullmann feels passionately about enabling people to make informed land management decisions and is especially excited to be working for the Xerces Society as the Yolo County Pollinator Monitoring and Outreach Coordinator.

Katharina received her BSc in Biology and French from the University of St Andrews, Scotland. Her field research experience extends from the rainforests of Madagascar to the wilds of New Jersey. Katharina’s previous research experiences in pollination biology and landscape ecology has fueled her interests in understanding land-use effects on pollinators. Her interest in science, education and outreach led her to the non-profit sector. Working for two small non-profits in the town of Telluride, Colorado, Katharina coordinated educational programs, developed curricula, and presented information about science and ecology to a wide range of audiences. Katharina’s experiences working on and managing small farms in several locations in the US and in Austria, has given her a better understanding and appreciation for the kind of work (i.e. hard work) and the kind of person (i.e. passionate) it takes to grow food.

As the Pollinator Monitoring and Outreach Coordinator, Katharina is working with Dr. Claire Kremen at UC Berkeley to monitor a native bee habitat restoration program at farm sites throughout Yolo County. This restoration program, a collaborative effort of the Xerces Society, UC Berkeley and California Audubon, is working with private landowners to implement restoration techniques that are both pollinator and farm friendly. In addition, Katharina is working with farmers, conservation groups, and agricultural professionals to communicate the value of native bees and the services they provide.
