My research experiences in insect ecology have recently culminated in
a Master's degree in entomology from the University of California, Davis,
where I examined ways to ehance conservation biological control of pest
insects in vineyard agroecosystems. I also have experience working with
insects in salt marsh, coastal hill, and tall-grass prairie ecosystems.
Throughout my educational career, I have had numerous opportunities
to work as an educator for students of many different ages, developing
curriculum and other educational materials to engage students and citizens
in general science, entomology and ecology. I have most enjoyed bringing
students outdoors to explore an area together and talk with them about
natural history and insect ecology. My love for studying insects and
engaging in education and outreach, coupled with my desire to work towards
the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats, has led me to
the Xerces Society.
With the Xerces Society, I will be primarily working to
develop a program to use aquatic macroinvertebrate bioassessment in
Pacific Northwest wetlands, based on programs that currently exist in
other states. Then, I will be developing a CD-ROM with monitoring protocols
and an identification key for wetland aquatic invertebrates.
When I'm not at work, I can be found doing scientific
illustrations or working on illustrating a children's book. I love to
spend as much time as I can outside, watching insects, running, hiking,
or backpacking. I enjoy exploring Portland with my fiance, Pete, or
on rainy days, staying at home, knitting, and watching a good National
Geographic or BBC nature documentary.
